It is with great sadness that I write to let you all know that Trevor Hawkins, who was the organist at St Leonard’s church in Sandridge for almost 70 years, passed away last Thursday, 26 March, at the age of 96.
Many of you will remember Trevor, who was our organist from 1954 to 2022, when he retired. He first learned to play the organ at St Saviour’s church in Sandpit Lane as a young man. He was also a keen bellringer, which he began shortly after arriving at St Leonard’s, and was our steeple-keeper until he was almost 90 years old.
Trevor’s coffin will be received into the church at 4.30pm on Wednesday 15 April, followed by a short service at 5pm. His funeral will take place at 10.30am on Thursday 16 April, followed by a wake in church. His ashes will eventually be buried in the Garden of Rest at the end of a Sunday service.
All who remember Trevor and would like to pay their respects are very welcome to attend either service.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
The Revd Wendy Sellers
